On a humid afternoon in Philadelphia, John M. Whalen is in a race against time to make it back before 5 p.m. Successfully making the trip home from school, the 10-year-old plops down on his living room floor, turning the knobs on his 12” black and white TV. As the classical music plays from his loudspeakers, he places his cowboy hat on his head and picks up his toy raygun. His eyes are fixated on one thing only: Flash Gordon.
But that was decades ago; a time before special effects, color TVs and endless re-runs of “Law & Order.” A time where serials, westerns and science fiction ruled and kids still had to use their imaginations. After all, when you’re 10 years old everything looks real.
Now it’s 2010 and Whalen is all grown up. Even though time passed, his age is the only thing that changed. That bright-eyed kid sitting Indian-style on his living room floor watching Flash Gordon and reading Tarzan after school might not be a kid anymore, but he still has the same sense of imagination and craving for adventure. |

I was just checking in to post the article and I see you beat me to it, Johne! Thanks. The reporter did a good job, except she didn't make it clear that the whole book was serialized first here in RGR. But overall it's a pretty good article. Especially since I found out I'm a losy interview subject. How she made sense of anything I said amazes me.
Thanks, Paul. _________________ John M. Whalen
